during an unseasonably cold spell in the northeast. adding to the damage left by hurricane sandy. a nor'easter blew through the east coast yesterday, dumping snow and rain on a region that's barely begun to dig out from sandy. we've got new pictures from staten island where several inches of wet snow are threatening to topple already weakened trees. power was knocked out to some 60,000 homes in newark and new jersey overnight. many of which had just had their service restored after many days in the dark. there's also renewed headaches for millions of commuters as passenger trains grind to a halt, and at least 1,300 flights are kept at the gates at the airports. let's go to meteorologist bill karins for a look at what is unfolding here. bill. >> good morning. before i get to the details, talking about joe's point there, nine days apart between these two events. i can almost guarantee you go back through history of hurricane landfalls, and i don't think any area has ever seen a snowstorm nine days after they dealt with a storm surge like we had with sandy. i mean, it's just ridiculous tha

sandy hit new jersey, voters there have given him a 72% approval rating. the highest recorded by quinnipiac for a new jersey governor. ever. 95% of new jersey voters gave christie an excellent or good rating for his response to hurricane sandy. and despite criticism from some national republican leaders, 84% approved of christie's praise of president obama's response to the storm, including 69% of republicans. newark's democratic mayor, cory booker, told the new jersey star ledger today, quote, i'm giving a run consideration. critical to my decision is not the difficulties of the politics or positioning in polls, but choosing the position from which i can make the best contributions to the city and state i love. meanwhile, a new rutgers eagleton poll finds governor christie leading mayor booker in a hypothetical race, 53 to 34%. joining me now, david corn and msnbc political analyst, jonathan allen, senior washington correspondent for politico. david corn, let's talk about cory booker for a moment, who i think was poised to run for governor probably prior to chris christie's p

, joe. 11 days since sandy struck, and now new york city and surrounding areas are now having gas rations. every other day you can get gas depending on the last digit of your license plate. this is because of supply and distribution issues. the power is going back on in a lot of those gas stations, but these lines continue. just to give you an example in brooklyn where i live, at 2:00 a.m. when i come to work, it was still a two-hour-long line. people sitting there with gas cans waiting to get it. it's incredible that it continues now almost two weeks since sandy struck. gas rationing because of shortages in new york city. this morning temperatures continue to be very cold on the heels of that nor'easter. the snow is still on the ground. bundle up. windchills in the 20s in new england. even down to the 30s all the way down to washington, d.c. so this is it, though. we're going to start to warm it up in this region of the country. we desperately need it. it's been rough out there. it's going to be in the 50s today instead of the 40s. we should melt a lot of that snow. as we go thro

. consider $50 billion in damages now that we're looking at the superstorm sandy. how disgusting is that? i do like the fact that at the end of the day what motored the most is individual votes which overpowered the money spent. donors will on both sides have some frustration about the amount of money that was spent and was that effective? at a point, i don't think people cared about the television advertising. it was too much. and i think we have a real problem with money in politics. it's going to become part of the conversation going forward. maybe campaigns will look at how they spend the money in terms of ground game and other ways to reach voters instead of so much on advertising and negative advertising and sort of lying about things like welfare and the other kinds of things. but i certainly think we need to reign in the amount of money being spent. >> if television ads weren't effective, he wouldn't have outspent mitt romney. there are things that outside groups can do. we run a lot of ads. >> you guys think you lost this on television ads? you're in for a two two years, my friend.

jobless claims which have some sandy issues involved or the fiscal cliff talks? >> definitely the fiscal cliff. what you were talking about yesterday, boehner's comments really turned things around for the markets, all this sense of optimism all of a sudden. we saw the markets go from down triple digits for the dow up to triple digits. we haven't seen a swing like that since over a year ago. it's been october of 2011 was the last time it happened. it's definitely the fiscal cliff driving things. we heard commentary from lloyd blankfein, between that and the lead story -- one of the top stories on the front page of the "wall street journal" suggesting the president is flexible on the tax hikes, that sounds like a deal might get done. you see a gain of 50 or 60 points. gdp up 2.7% from 2%. there was concerning things when you dig into the numbers, it's all fiscal cliff all the time here, chuck. >> oh, hopefully, as you guys say, it will all -- people will rise above, right, becky? >> that's right. >> i know. i see the button. up next, we're taking a deep dive into the u.s. relationship wit
